The Screen of ikee infected iPhone

The 21-year-old hacker who wrote the first iPhone worm has landed a job developing software for the phones.

Ashley Towns wrote Ikee, a self-propagating program that changed the phone’s wallpaper to a picture of 80s pop singer Rick Astley.

Mr Towns has now been employed as a iPhone application developer for Australian firm mogeneration.

Ikee was not malicious but paved the way for a more serious variant which targeted users of the online bank ING.

“It leaves a nasty taste that he has been rewarded like this, yet has not even expressed regret for his actions,” Graham Cluley of Security firm Sophos told BBC News.

Mr Towns said that he had created the virus to raise the issue of security. He has not faced any criminal charges.

‘Wild worm’

It was designed to exploit jail-broken phones, where a user has removed Apple’s protection mechanisms to allow the phone to run any software.

Estimates suggest there could be up to 25,000 jailbroken phones in Australia, whilst up to 10% of the more than 55m iPhones and iPod Touches devices sold worldwide are thought to be cracked.

It specifically targeted those handsets with SSH (secure shell) installed, a program that enables other devices to connect to the phone and modify the system and files.

The worm was able to infect those phones where the owners had not changed the default password after installing SSH.

It could be removed by changing the phone’s password and deleting some files.

After it was found circulating “in the wild”, a second worm was discovered. Mr Cluley said it was “based” on Mr Town’s code and targeted people in the Netherlands who used their iPhones for internet banking with Dutch online bank ING.

The new worm redirects the bank’s customers to a lookalike site with a log-in screen. It can also be used to remotely control the phone without the users permission.

Analysts said that it was designed with a “clear financial motive”.

Mr Towns is the latest in a long line of programmers to find employment after a high-profile hack.

In 2008, New Zealand computer hacker Owen Thor Walker was hired by a telecommunications company as a security consultant.

He had previously pleaded guilty or being part of an organisation that was thought to have caused millions of dollars worth of damage.

“We interviewed Ashley, assessed him with our iPhone developer test – which he passed with flying colours – and we employed him today,” said a spokesperson for mogeneration.

Data speeds are upped to 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and the camera is now a 3 megapixel unit with tap-to-autofocus and auto white balance — and just as expected, it now supports 30fps VGA video recording with editing features. You’re also getting a built-in compass, Nike+ support, and a new battery that offers 5 hours of 3G talk time and 9 hours of WiFi internet use. There are some surprises, too — holding down the home button now enables a new voice control interface that lets you do everything from make calls to control iTunes, and Apple’s touting a new “fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating.” New and end-of-contract pricing is set at $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB when it goes on sale June 18th Stateside and in 80 more countries in August — and the current 8GB 3G will remain on sale for $99, effective immediately. You’ll have to pay a bit more if you’re mid-contract, though — $299 for the 3G and $399/$499 for the 3G S.

The Iphone entered into the indian markets with a lot of hype.  People in India were going crazy to buy this piece of shear technology. But after use reviews of Iphone are just not  good. The Iphone misses bulk features which you
can easily find on any simple and cheap multimedia phone making it ( Iphone ) somewhat worthless. its full of drawbacks and misses a hell lot of features which have been discussed below :

Lets take the Bluetooth first – Though it supports Bluetooth its restricted to only for Bluetooth headset. You can’t use the Bluetooth in the Iphone to transfer files ( images , videos , mp3s ) or contacts to and fro other phones and not even your PC.

The phone just has a single button. Its somewhat good for typical touchscreen users but not for those who are not familier with it. And When some one calls you and you have your Iphone locked the only thing you can do is to accept
the call , theres no way to reject it…

It has a 2 Megapixcel camera but at prices 31k n 36k….without any flash…you can have any 5 Megapixcel Camera Phone. The camera is just good for daylight shots..or you can say its far better from other camera phones….but in dim light …the pics are just not up to the level..forget about the night….theres no flash…motion image quality is also poor.

There is no zoom option available in the camera and no video recording

The Ringtone volume is too bad.Its due to the small speakers in the bottom of the phone. If you misplace it , you will have a hard time finding your phone…….

The speaker sound output is also not good .You can have a better sound output with any nokia or ericsson phone. Its good if you can have your earphones plugged into your ears all the time.

You cannot set the custom ringtomes easily cause you have just two options ,you purchase the ringtones from itunes stores or use the itunes software to create a custom ring tone.

There is no FM Radio.

The Best part of the Iphone is its browsing capability but it does not support flash.

Iphone supports pdf reader but there is no way to transfer pdf files to your iphone. Either you have to download it from the internet and then you just can’t store them as well. So you need install some third party software to download and store the pdf files.

No USB drive support. You cannot carry around your data with the Iphone.In short you just cant use the internal memory as you like.You can’t save anything while browsing the internet on the iPhone . All you can do is use it to syncronise songs , calendar , contacts . When you connect this phone to your pc the one thing you will see is a drive containing pics taken from your Iphone camera . Thats all you can furnish out of it.

You cannot forward a sms. And there no space for the mms facility.

Theres no support for java applications.

No copy n paste functions available for instance you cannot copy a part of your email and paste it to the other..its just not possible or you can’t use it to copy n paste any url .

Theres no Removable Battery. if something goes wrong with it , you just have a single option of sending it to the apple outlet.

When you send a picture through an email it compresses the size without giving an option to send it in full resolution.

You cannot use your phone as a wireless modem . You just cant connect it to your PC and Browse over Internet.

So , this phone is really not worthy at such a high Price.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Vodafone Essar, India’s third-largest mobile operator, will sell Apple’s (AAPL.O) iPhone 3G at 31,000 rupees ($708) for the 8GB model, a senior company official, who could not be named, said on Wednesday,

Vodafone Essar and larger rival Bharti Airtel (BRTI.BO) will start selling the device from Friday.

Vodafone Essar will charge 36,100 rupees ($824) for the 16GB model. The new iPhone sells for as low as $199 in the United States.

Even if 135% exide duty is Performed then also , the iPhone must be not more than Rs.17000 in India, this is just a market action on india.
